Grammarly Vs Outwrite

Grammarly vs. Outwrite (2023 Comparison)

Table of Contents

Grammarly and Outwrite are similar in more ways than one.

Both writing tools check for spelling and grammatical mistakes, help you rewrite sentences in multiple ways, and have built-in plagiarism checkers that are yet to gain my trust.

Other similarities include passive voice detection, the option to replace work words and phrases with alternatives, and compatibility with more platforms and apps than a single person would likely use in their lifetime.

Now that I have outlined the similarities let\’s uncover the unique characteristics between Grammarly and Outwrite.

Overview: What both tools are about?

\"\"

Grammarly is an AI-powered writing tool that gives users real-time feedback on spelling, punctuation, grammar, and much more.

A built-in plagiarism detection tool (only available to users who have subscribed for the premium plan) is another of its most popular features.

The plagiarism detector scans your written content for similarities against a database of existing content on the internet. Exact matches are highlighted in red, with the percentage of content that is likely duplicate mentioned.

On top of that, Grammarly lets you tailor your writing by:

  • Target audience (general, knowledgeable, expert),
  • Formality (formal, informal, neutral),
  • Domain (general, business, academic, technical, casual, and creative)

If I had written this piece in 2022, the description of Grammarly would be complete by now. Yet, in 2023, any serious review of this writing tool cannot be considered complete unless it mentions GrammarlyGO.

GrammarlyGO is an on-demand generative AI tool (much like ChatGPT) that lets you compose content from scratch, ideates with you to expand on existing content, and learns from your writing style to mimic it.

\"\"

Outwrite, like Grammarly, relies on AI to check your content for grammatical and spelling mistakes, offer rephrasing suggestions, and detect duplication.

Other features include style tips to improve the clarity of your writing, structure recommendations to construct your sentences in an easy-to-read manner, and alternative word suggestions to help your writing stand out.

Outwrite also helps you create a personal dictionary (again, another similarity with Grammarly) and offers real-time reports on statistics such as word count, reading and speaking time, grade level, and readability (something that Grammarly does as well).

Ease of Use: How user-friendly are the interfaces of each product?

Having used Grammarly since 2011, I can vouch for the user-friendliness of its interface.

The main reason why I\’m such a huge fan of Grammarly\’s interface is that everything that you need to tweak the suggestions it offers is neatly laid out on the menu, leaving little room for confusion.

Here\’s the proof (taken from Grammarly\’s MS Word plug-in):

\"\"

The interface of Grammarly\’s web-editor is equally user-friendly:

\"\"

Even though they look different – like having a menu at the top for MS Word and a sidebar for the web editor – they\’re equally easy to use.

Outwrite is as easy to navigate as Grammarly.

Upon visiting the website and signing into the app, the following screen welcomes you:

\"\"

Hover your cursor over any option on the left, and a detailed explainer emerges:

\"\"

All in all, as far as user interfaces go, neither Grammarly nor Outwrite make things complicated for their users.

Customization: How customizable are the settings and options for each product?

One of the major reasons why I\’m a loyal Grammarly user is because it lets me customize almost every suggestion it offers.

For instance, you can create a personal dictionary, sound more/less confident in your writing, and do much more.

\"\"

That is not all.

Grammarly also lets you customize its suggestions based on domains, intent, audience, and formality.

\"\"

Outwrite doesn\’t offer as many options for customization.

The only exception is its paraphrasing tool, which offers six different ways to rewrite your content.

\"\"

Grammarly, via the GrammarlyGO feature, does all that and more.

Type your content in Grammarly\’s web editor and tell GrammarlyGO how you want it to be rewritten (there is no limit to the number of ways you can rephrase your writing).

Here\’s the proof:

\"\"

Thus, as far as room and options for customization are concerned, Grammarly is a clear winner.

Analysis Reports: What types of reports does each product offer to help users improve their writing?

Grammarly and Outwrite don\’t offer much in terms of analysis reports.

Each only offers real-time reports on statistics such as word count, reading and speaking time, grade level, and readability.

\"\"
Grammarly\’s Statistics

Here\’s a snapshot taken from Outwrite\’s:

\"\"

Additionally, Grammarly sends a weekly email highlighting:

  • How productive you were over the last week,
  • Number of errors Grammarly found in your writing,
  • Your accuracy compared to fellow Grammarly users.
\"\"

As you can see, these reports are pretty basic and only cover the surface of your writing. As such, I don\’t think they may not be of much help.

Integrations: How well does each product integrate with other platforms and tools?

Grammarly integrates with (almost) every platform and writing tool available.

\"\"

Furthermore, it provides API access to anyone interested.

So, if you’re a developer, you can easily incorporate Grammarly’s real-time writing aid into your software or app.

Outwrite also integrates with word processors, webpages, and apps.

The writing tool only offers proofreading API, meaning you\’d have to download the app or use the web editor to use other features.

Rephrasing Tools: How effective are the rephrasing tools for each product?

Grammarly has a highly effective rephrasing tool that lets you decide how you want the rewriting to go, albeit indirectly.

The type of paraphrasing suggestions Grammarly offers depends on your selected \’goals\’.

\"\"

Can\’t find the option you were looking for? Try GrammarlyGO.

GrammarlyGO lets you add prompts (much like ChatGPT). As a result, you can tell it to rephrase your writing any way you like.

However, while ChatGPT offers unlimited prompts to everyone, GrammarlyGO\’s prompts are limited to 1,000 per user per month (which is why in the following screenshot 0 prompts are remaining).

\"\"

Outwrite offers six different ways to rephrase your writing.

These include:

\"\"

As someone who has used both rephrasing tools, I am pretty confident that Outwrite is much better at rephrasing.

That is because it delivers more natural and audience-focused rewrites than Grammarly\’s, at least in my opinion.

Pricing and Support: How do the pricing plans and customer support options compare between the two products?

Here’s what Grammarly charges for its plans:

\"\"

Here are the prices for Grammarly\’s different plans:

\"\"

On the surface, Outwrite\’s plans are more cost-effective, though Grammarly provides better value for money.

Want to know why?
Say hello to GrammarlyGO.

GrammarlyGO is an AI writing assistant that lets you generate entire passages from scratch, personalize your writing based on any criteria you sent, and do much, much more.

Accuracy: How accurate are the suggestions and corrections offered by each product?

After using Grammarly and Outwrite to check and refine my writing, I can say with confidence that they are the most accurate AI-based writing assistants.

That wasn\’t necessarily the case a few years ago, especially with Grammarly, whose initial focus was catching spelling and grammatical errors.

However, thanks to regular updates and AI support, it is currently as accurate as Outwrite at emphasizing style and readability as well.

As a result, it\’s extremely difficult (if not outright impossible) to tell which of these writing apps is more accurate.

Writing Style: How well does each product cater to different writing styles and genres?

Grammarly lets you pick from six different writing styles, including:

  • Academic
  • Business
  • General
  • Technical
  • Casual
  • Creative

Outwrite offers only two styles – casual and formal – meaning it may not be as useful to the academic or creative crowd.

Educational Material: What type of educational material and resources do each product offer to help users improve their writing skills?

Grammarly doesn’t offer much in terms of educational material.

Unfortunately, that is also the case with Outwrite.

As a result, if you need help to make the best use of either of these apps, independent tutorials on YouTube are your best friend.

Free Vs Paid Plans: How do the free and paid plans for each product compare in terms of features and value?

Various differences exist between Grammarly’s and QuillBot’s free and paid plans.

Mobile Integration: How well does each product integrate with mobile devices?

Grammarly has a mobile app for Android and iOS devices.

You can copy-paste your writing into the app to have Grammarly inspect it. Additionally, the app generates writing reports and lets you customize the suggestions on the go.

Outline doesn\’t have a mobile application.

Outwrite is available on five different platforms: Google Docs, MS Word, Google Chrome, Edge, and Web App.

Plagiarism Checker: How effective are the plagiarism-checking tools for each product?

Grammarly and Outwrite offer plagiarism checkers in their paid plans.

However, based on my years of experience of using both tools, neither is as accurate at detecting duplication at dedicated plagiarism checkers.

Thus, if the success/failure of your writing depends on 100 percent originality, tools like Copyscape are a much better bet.

Language Support: How many languages do each product support for grammar and spelling checks?

Grammarly only supports the English language.

It lets users customize their writing to a specific English audience, including American, Canadian, British, and Australian.

\"\"
A snapshot from Grammarly\’s website

Outwrite is compatible with English, French, and Spanish languages.

Similar to Grammarly, it lets you tailor your writing to multiple English-speaking audiences, such as Australian, Canadian, UK, US, South African, and New Zealand.

Alternatives: What alternatives are there to both of these tools?

Here are the various alternatives to these apps:

  • Hemingway
  • WordTune
  • Autocrit
  • Scrivener
